THE BEST COFFEE SHOPS IN JAKARTA (TOP 10 LIST) - UPDATED LIST

I once made my list of the best coffee shops in Jakarta, and almost too ashamed to admit that due to the amateur writing and photography skill it's almost criminal. The post was made in 2013, back then I often use the term "the best" to a list that was technically covers all coffee shops in Jakarta, so it's not best-best, but this boy right here is all grown up, has his mind and sense opened to the F&B scene (in a way better educated by experience), is realizing that Starbucks' coffee is not the best best (I always go for the fraps nowadays), and is now taking better pictures! So I guess this post should be the more reliable one.

I am an avid fan of coffee, and coffee is just like xanax for some, metaphorically my drug. I honestly don't think that coffee keeps me awake or more energized, it might be for some people, but I honestly love coffee because it keeps me happy and I love drinking it, that's the most honest answer. None of that crappy "oh I feel like my life is 180 degree different after I drink coffee and I feel fucking lucky".

This list is created based on my experience. I know some of you might start thinking "who the hell is he dare enough to claim these the best", "is he a fucking coffee master?", well I clearly have the voice as an individual, as simple as that. If you don't like this list then it's really up to you and you can always go and suck a dick.

So here you go guys, the TOP 10 BEST COFFEE SHOPS IN JAKARTA, this is not a ranking order, I compile the list based on alphabetical order. I am friends with so many coffee shops owner in Jakarta or at least know them personally, I could easily make the TOP 20, but I really want to include the best of the best so I decide to go with 10, and plus if I make the TOP 20 I would be a little insincere. My honesty might affect my friendship towards the business owners, but that's the least of my worries, and since I visit this these coffee shops quite continuously, if I encounter better ones in the future, unfortunately I might have to "eliminate" my least favorite at that moment, it's a tough tough call.

I have been a loyal fan of Yoshua Tanu, Daryanto and Aston for quite some time, because every coffee shop opened by these people are always awesome (may Pandava rest in peace). Not only famous for their beautiful coffee, Common Grounds is also one of my all time favorite all-day breakfast cafes. Their food is amazing and honestly, never have I had any issue with their food.

What to order: Uncle Phil Fried Chicken/Breakfast Burrito/Eggs Benedict with extra truffle oil + Iced Latte (I usually go with the Dama almond milk)

Crematology Coffee Roasters

I love Crematology for various reasons, their Senopati branch is probably the coffee shop that I personally visit the most in my life, especially on the weekdays where it's a bit more quiet and I love how I can just be lonely and do my works while everyone is really minding their own business, it's the coziest in their own way. Sometimes I find their coffee just a little watery, but mostly they made it spot on with their house blend, but it really is the ambiance that makes me love this coffee shop very much.

It's not often that you find a coffee shops that sells good food, their buttermilk waffle is all fragrant and bomb, but their pesto pasta that caught my attention the most.

Djule Kofi

Djule Koffie is another brainchild from the same owner who owns Ombe Koffie. I would love to add in Ombe to my list, it's an amazing establishment, but I decide to put Djule instead due to some qualifications: larger and better location and the fact that they actually let me have the classic iced cappuccino (not the ones in the bottle) and everytime I revisit Djule they all know what I want without me asking *love*. The character of Djule's coffee is rich with this rather strong intensity and refreshing aftertaste carefully fade towards the end. I remember how excited I was with Djule's opening because finally there is another great coffee shop opening in town.

What to order: my classic iced cappuccino, but you can go to this guy named Ajie and ask for special custom order.

Giyanti Coffee Roastery

Giyanti is one of my all time favorite coffee shops (and always on my top 3) in Jakarta and I love it best when Hendrik (the owner) is the one brewing the coffee for me. I sometimes experienced that when the other barista made it (not that it's bad), it's just not Hendrik-perfect. I am obsessed with their iced cappuccino (IDR 40k) for that rich, subtle, creamy and chocolaty aftertaste and the perfect pairing to the iced cappuccino should be their almond croissant or Lamington.

What to order: Basically every coffee Hendrik made with his cold hands (I love their Bali Kintamai beans) + Almond Croissant/Lamington

Jakarta Coffee House is one of the pioneers of coffee culture in Jakarta and it has been around for almost 6 years now. Their coffee creations somehow still has this conventional touch to it and people often go here for their manual brews. "Si Petung" which by the way is their signature coffee blend is famous for being medium-ly roasted resulting a certain state of acidity, body and clean aftertaste.

Kopi Tuku

Kopi Tuku is the little-est of them all when you talk about space, the whole shop can hold probably less than 10 people, but when it comes to their coffee, they manage to impress me BIG time. Kopi Tuku is one of the best coffee shops in the South (precisely Cipete) and they are highly popular for their Es Kopi Tetangga for as cheap as IDR 18k and I could really have 2/3 on a single visit. It's just sweet & creamy with the perfect amount of milk and coffee together.

What to order: Es Kopi Tetangga are you kidding me.

Native is so far my favorite coffee shop in Pantai Indah Kapuk and the young folks running this coffee shop sure knows how to impress not only with their good looks (I get that A LOT on my Snapchat everytime I am here) but their coffee as well. I found their coffee tasty with the right amount of creaminess, sweet and acidity that I like.

One Fifteenth Coffee

In a nutshell, One Fifteenth is just the perfect place for coffee lovers who are looking for a venue that's simply designed to work, meetings, a pleasure me-time over good coffee and decent Palembang food.

Six Ounces Coffee

If you ask me my most favorite of the favorites, then Six Ounces is certainly on my top 2, sometimes I wonder if either Giyanti or Six Ounce is better for me but the fun fact is that Six Ounce is actually using Giyanti's beans for the coffee here *ahem*, BUT the thing is, I think Six Ounces consistently makes better coffee than Giyanti when Hendrik is not making it for me. I love everything about Six Ounces from the place, the design, the coffee, the amazing food (their burger is one of the best in town), the only thing that I dislike about it is that it's located quite far from where I live, and trust me there is NO good coffee shop in the West! My go to order (and I constantly Snapchat it) is their Iced Coffee with Dama Almond Milk, what a fresh rich creamy (and sort of healthy) iced coffee with one scoop of vanilla ice cream as the cherry on top.

TOF Sicacilla

I bloody love TOF for its bodied coffee and the fact that it's probably the only coffee shop in Jakarta that serves BONSOY at the freaking moment, if you have good coffee and you blend it with bonsoy then it's just going to be pure bomb for me, I really don't mind paying extra IDR 15k additional charge for bonsoy.

What to order: ICED SOY LATTE!

Special mention to JCo, it might not be a coffee specialist, but lately I have been super impressed with the fact that their coffee is getting better than ever, even better than Starbucks when comparing both on the classics (Americano, Cappuccino, Latte)

What I want to see in the future?
BONSOY PLEASE!!! If only it's cheap to purchase, it can cost up to IDR 150k/box (USD 12) while it's only IDR 40k or USD 3/box. So sad. I love the fact that more and more coffee shops in Bali are starting to have Bonsoy in store, even though I sadly have to pay IDR 15k additional fee, but it's worth it for me.

WTF MARKET ID FUTURE PICNIC - DAY ONE

Hello guys! First of all, happy Saturday to you and I hope that you're having a great weekend! I decided to write and publish this blog post soon so that you know where to go this weekend if you're feeling like stuck with options.

Earlier today I went to (yet another) cool bazaar created by We The Future crew and this time they come up with the "Future Picnic" theme with major monochromatic concept. A little flashback, I think it was around two years ago that I first collaborated with them on their very first bazaar in Grand Indonesia and it's just awesome to see how far and big they've grown all this time. The currently running bazaar is just grander with more food and fashion tenants at this huge space around the Pantai Indah Kapuk 2 Marketing Office. Kudos to the team, especially siblings Cindy and Richard. I came to the bazaar opening to support them and I must say that for a first day (and technically a week day) the amount of people visiting the bazaar was quite impressive. I heard good praises from the tenant owners whom I personally known and I predict that Saturday and Sunday will be more insane!

The WTF Market Future Picnic host 100% local food and fashion tenants, and since my specialties are more to the food zone, I am going to be talking a lot about the delicious food I had here. Comparing to a few years ago, I visit less and less bazaar and if you've been following me for quite some time now or happen to read this post, I have been declining all seminar and talk show requests because I think it's getting boring and old for me, and I am as well very selective in choosing which bazaars I want to attend, and WTF Market is just like an old friend to me so yes!

I was quite surprised to see this snake long queue at the main entrance of the bazaar and it was all because of La Maison! The Medan originated patisserie and Macaron shop exclusively come and open a big booth here. According to my friends who happened to be at the event, the queue has been coming NON STOP since the minute they opened and people actually queued even before it opened! Can't imagine the kaching they're earning I need to take gold shower.

 There are so many flavors you can choose but my personal favorite has got to be the PB&J.

 Hokkaido Baby is in the house too! If you're looking for scrumptious cheese tart, go grab theirs!

 Sour Sally also opened a booth promoting their latest Black Punch cold pressed juice. I found the "Energy" one quite pleasant actually with apple dominated flavor and overall sweet!

 Water++ with their sweet and refreshing infused water + chia seeds

 PS: the followings were the ones that I tried and should I say my favorites? There are a lot more tenants but after realizing how my stomach is not a bottomless pit and I had eating capacity limit, these are the ones that are highlighted by me. I am pretty sure the other ones that I did not manage to try are nice too!

DOUGH DARLINGS

I initially wanted to try their original donuts but there were only two flavors available so instead I went to try their mini donuts and tried both sweet and savory versions of it! The sweet one had this salted egg yolk filling to it and the savory one was the chicken + their homemade sauce. I found myself liking the savory one better because it was just more unique and the concept was refreshing. I expected more kick to the salted egg filling.

They also had a nice spot to chill, but I functioned this to take the food photos as it provided better lighting. You can even snap an OOTD pic here and posed around the white maple tree!

DUM DUM THAI DRINKS

The tree made a good backdrop and emphasized the color of the thai tea better. I don't think I need to comment much on Dum Dum as I honestly think they serve the best thai tea drinks in town at the moment (and cheap af only IDR 20k).

GAS WATT

This was more to the cute side while the milky drink being just ok. Not everyday that you found this cute gas tank shaped drink with flashing lights underneath! Idea definitely on point.

LA MAISON MACARONS

Pretty packaging and wide range of flavors, treat these cuties for yourself or just make it as a gift.

YAYA
Master Squid is definitely larger and chunkier than this, but in terms of seasoning, I found myself liking Yaya's version better. It was just saltier with a hint of peppery flavor.

BAGO (BABI BEGO)

Bago is just something that I never miss whenever I know they're opening a booth in a bazaar I attended. It's owned by my good friend @catherinesumitri but that doesn't mean that I am getting biased, a bowl of Bago is just like having a nice simple little treat of rice with tasty & juicy pork belly , sambal matah, daun singkong, and green chili. Bago is overall tasty, spicy and addicting.

HOG HOCK
If I may become very honest, I was a bit skeptical about Hog Hock, there's just something about the design of the logo that rings serious to me, maybe because I go from a graphic design background so I understand, but this skeptical bitch quickly converted RIGHT AFTER THAT VERY FIRST SCOOP! Hog Hock is a must try, I had their Combo which consist of cooked and torched pork knuckle that was incredibly juicy, tender and well seasoned, along with the pork crackling and one large chunky pork skewer. Don't forget their sambal matah for that extra kick.

OD: OH DELICIOUS

The pork (yet again) was tender but since I love having salty and savory type of pork. I prefer Bago's or Hog Hock's version better, but trust me this is not bad at all.

UMEKE'IA
Another fucking stunner is this poke bowl from UMEKE'IA. The guy who was standing in front of the booth shouted "we have poke balls here", I was honestly first referring to the pokemon balls and I thought they sell pokemon balls cake, but when I quickly turn around oh it's actually "poke bowls". Anyway why is this a freaking stunner? Because to me it's THAT good and healthy! You can choose on whether having the poke bowls with rice or salad base then proceed with the healthy and fresh toppings such as raw salmon, carrot, grated corns, seaweed. It's the freshness of the ingredients and that simple dressing sauce that makes this really nice! This is just highly recommended.

Pantomime artists

Besides food tenants, they also have a lot of fashion and gadget related tenants as well, so glad that they have Lady H here!

Dum Dum queue just won't stop!

Spent quite a few hours here waiting for the traffic, luckily it was not too hot and humid earlier today and the breeze was actually pretty nice here in PIK neighborhood that we did not mind sitting outside for prolly 2 hours.
